NAIDOC week has been a bubble of activity with the Koorie organisations celebrating the occasion with a range of events and activities.
The national initiative, which has become a fixture for Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities, has gone from strength to strength since it’s re-creation in 1975.
The theme of 2019, Voice, Treaty, Truth has explored the history of the event and the fitting timing as Victoria negotiates Treaty with the national government.
One of the highlights of NAIDOC Week thus far was the march from the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service in Fitzroy to Federation Square in Melbourne’s CBD on the 5th of July.

Thousands walked alongside each other to celebrate and honour Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture, stopping for speeches outside parliament house and a traditional smoking ceremony on Swanston street.
The sentiments and attitudes of the crowd mirrored the objective of the NAIDOC theme, calling for greater recognition and acceptance amongst the identity that Australia continues to forge.
“For generations, we have sought recognition of our unique place in Australian history and society today,” the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee said.
“We need to be the architects of our lives and futures.”
Other notable events have included the traditional flag raising at the Aborigines Advancement League in Thornbury, which was followed by VAEAI’s annual movie day hosted at Hoyts Cinema in Thornbury.
Fantastic turnouts were witnessed for both as NAIDOC Week and the involvement of community continues to reflect the passion and pride of the Koorie community.
